Cheoah River Rafting

Class IV-IV+ “The Most Difficult River in the Southeast” NC

After more than 70 years water has been returned to the Cheoah River!! From the early 1900’s, after Santeetlah Dam was constructed for power generation, all the water flowed through a large iron tube leaving the river bed dry. Now, the Cheoah River is a nine mile, non-stop thrill ride with steep tumbling rapids and several large drops, including the fifteen foot tall Bear Creek Falls. The last two miles have an average gradient of 200 feet per mile. Compared to other rivers like the Ocoee or the Gauley at 65 feet per mile, the Cheoah River pushes white water rafting to the edge. We put a maximum of four guests with a guide in each raft and have two additional kayak guides that support the trip. A van follows the trip with an additional guide to take photos and provide support at the hardest rapids.

This is a demanding raft trip! Rafters are required to have experience on other difficult rivers like the Upper/Middle Ocoee, the Gauley or Section 4 of the Chattooga, and must be at least 16 years of age.
